Home arrow The Firm

Founded by John Rosley in 1984 as a Family Law and Divorce Solicitors practice in Nottingham City Centre.  The Firm grew to a comfortable size of 25 staff. A decision was made in early 2007 to concentrate on our speciality to avoid the risk that with growth we would become increasingly a generalised practice.  That decision resulted in a downsizing of the Firm and a rigid adherence to our highly specialised areas of work.

Our profile as Family and Divorce Solicitors is that of a team of skilled and at times unconventional legal professionals offering a friendly and personal service maintaining the close link between a single Solicitor and the client from first interview to the conclusion of the case.  Every area of our work is directly related to the skills required of a family and divorce lawyer and we reject any other work that is offered to us.

John Rosley qualified as a solicitor in New South Wales, Australia before coming to the UK and establishing his practice in Nottingham.  John has maintained his Australian connection and has serviced many Australian clients.  It is believed that John is the only Australian family and divorce lawyer practising in the Midlands.  John has undertaken many cases with an Australian or International aspect including Divorce, International Child Abduction, International Contact and Financial Provision Disputes, Australian CSA Enforcements and various other issues but always in Family Law.

John also undertakes all of the firm's property conveyancing and Wills and Probate work.Because of our insistence on specialisation we reject any other areas of work offered to us.

Now the answer……….

Why instruct Rosleys Solicitors in Nottingham?

  • First and foremost with modern communications and technology the location of the firm becomes almost irrelevant.  We have many clients throughout the UK and internationally to whom we offer the same care and attention and personal service even though we rarely if ever meet. When meetings are required we encourage our clients to visit the beautiful city of Nottingham and in appropriate cases we will travel to meet the clients wherever they are.
  • The Firm has an extraordinarily high profile for a provincial practice having represented clients in the headlines on numerous occasions.
  • We will fight your cause vigorously and give you clear advice on the issues that we feel  you should sensibly contest and those that you should concede.  That can be the most valuable advice of all and distinguishes lawyers with good practical sense from those in whom good sense  may be lacking.

The partners offer our clients expertise and personal service at competitive fees. Based in Nottingham we have a clear economic advantage particularly over London Solicitors.

The following guideline hourly rates have been published by the Senior Costs Judge for Costs Assessments in the English and Welsh Courts with effect from 1st January 2008.

Both John and Claire are “Grade A” solicitors.

The hourly rates for "Grade A" Solicitors in various parts of the UK;

City of London                        £396

Central London                       £304

Outer London                         £219-£256

Nottingham City                     £203

Other areas between              £174-£191

John’s rate                            £175

Claire’s rate                          £150

All rates are quoted plus VAT and are current as at 12/03/08.

For conveyancing fees see our Property page.

  • The partners think “outside the box” ……………

There cannot be many solicitors who can actually say that they have made new law or pushed our legal system in new untried directions.  In 2006 John became the Law Society “Solicitor in the News” when he won a landmark case recovering £35,000 damages for harassment from a mother-in-law on behalf of a daughter-in-law.  Damages in Harassment had never before been awarded in the UK despite the fact that academic lawyers had been debating the existence of an action in Harassment for well over 200 years.

Thinking “outside the box” does not just get us in the news but serves our clients well in every day routine cases.

  • We are down to earth and realistic lawyers who will not talk down to you.  Send us the questions to which you have not received a straight answer from other advisors.
